He was a member of the Boumi Temple, the VFW in Timonium, the American Chemical Society, the Institute of Food Technologists, and a founding member of the Society of Flavor Chemists.  Earl was a Flavor Chemist for McCormick in Baltimore.

Mr. Earl Merwin, a charter member of The Society of Flavor Chemists, donated his private collection of flavor reference materials in 1999 which formed the foundation of The Society of Flavor Chemists’ Library.  The collection originally was housed at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, PA until October 2016.  The Society donated the flavor collection to the Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Library of Chemical History in Philadelphia, PA, in October 2016. Mr. Merwin served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II.
